Porto was my first love in Europe when we visited during our full-time travels. Later, I decided to settle down after traveling full-time for nearly 36 months. We all fell in love with Porto, Portugal! We even went house hunting and seriously considered making it home. In the end, Chris and I decided Lisbon was better for our family, but Porto is always in our hearts!

What We Love About Porto
The culture of Northern Portugal defines itself on warm hospitality, which can make up for cooler temps. Porto boasts a different climate than Lisbon and even colder waters (not much swimming happening at the beach here). The people are friendly and warm.
In fact, we lived outside of Porto in the Douro Valley for six weeks and were invited to someone’s house every Sunday! They’d never met us before, but they welcomed us with open arms. Only Chris could speak Portuguese at the time, and they all lived in small apartments, but that didn’t matter. We became part of various families.
How To Get To Porto
Flying
The airport in Porto is international and offers many flights in the summer months directly to Porto from various places worldwide.
- From Lisbon: Direct flights from Lisbon to Porto take about 1 hour. TAP Air Portugal and low-cost carriers like Ryanair offer frequent flights. Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is well-connected and just a 20-minute drive from the city center.

- From Faro (Algarve): Direct flights from Faro to Porto take about 1 hour and 15 minutes, making it a convenient option for those in the Algarve region.

Drive
- From Lisbon: Driving from Lisbon to Porto takes about 3 hours via the A1 freeway, which is well-maintained and offers beautiful views of the Portuguese countryside. It’s a straight shot north and an enjoyable road trip for families. We love driving this freeway, but note that tolls are a bit spendy, clocking in about 25€ each way.
- From Faro (Algarve): The drive from Faro to Porto takes around 5 hours and 30 minutes, following the A2 and A1 freeways. It’s a longer journey but offers a chance to explore different regions of Portugal along the way.

- From Lisbon: The Alfa Pendular high-speed train is the quickest and most comfortable option, taking about 2 hours and 45 minutes from Lisbon’s Santa Apolónia Station to Porto’s Campanhã Station. The train offers family-friendly amenities, and the scenic ride is a bonus.

- From Faro: The train from Faro to Porto, with a transfer in Lisbon, takes around 6 hours (This can be long with kids). It is a great way to see more of the country while relaxing in comfort.

- From Lisbon: Several bus companies, including Rede Expressos, offer frequent service from Lisbon to Porto. The journey takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes, with comfortable seats and onboard Wi-Fi—perfect for families.

- From Faro: Buses from Faro to Porto take around 6 hours and 30 minutes. While longer, it’s an affordable option with plenty of stops for stretching and snacks.

Note: While the metro is not a direct option from other cities, once you arrive in Porto, the Metro do Porto system is an efficient way to get around the city. If you’re coming from the airport, the metro’s Purple Line (Line E) will take you directly into the city center.

Historic Area
Porto Cathedral, or Sé do Porto, is one of the city’s oldest and most significant monuments, standing proudly on a hilltop with breathtaking views of the Douro River. This Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, with its fortified appearance, offers a glimpse into Porto’s rich history and architectural heritage.
The chapel itself hosts a crypt underneath and we loved exploring this with the kids!
Tip: Given its popularity, it’s wise to visit early in the day to avoid the crowds and fully appreciate it.
São Bento Station is more than just a transportation hub; it’s a cultural treasure in the heart of Porto. Known for its stunning azulejos (painted tiles), this railway station features over 20,000 tiles that depict important scenes from Portugal’s history (how cool is that?).
Despite its bustling nature, São Bento Station is a family-friendly spot. Whether you’re passing through on your way to another destination or stopping by to admire the tiles, the station is a cultural gem that adds a special touch to any Porto itinerary.
We stayed in Baião on our first visit and took the train to Porto. Parking can be difficult in Porto, and it is very walkable once there.
Clerigos Tower, or Torre dos Clérigos, is one of Porto’s most iconic landmarks, offering panoramic views of the city from its summit. This Baroque tower, part of the Clerigos Church, stands as a symbol of the city’s skyline, drawing visitors to climb its 225 steps for an unforgettable vista (yep, that’s lots of steps but totally worth it! ). The journey up the narrow staircase is an adventure in itself, rewarding you with breathtaking sights of Porto’s rooftops and the Douro River.
Note: The tower can get quite busy, especially on weekends. For families with young children, the climb may be challenging.
Fonte dos Leões, or the Fountain of the Lions, is a striking public fountain located near the University of Porto. Featuring four majestic bronze lions, this neo-Gothic structure is a popular meeting point and a symbol of the city’s artistic and historical heritage. The fountain’s elegant design makes it a picturesque spot for photos and a peaceful place to rest while exploring the surrounding area.
Tip: Since it is situated close to many of Porto’s key attractions, Fonte dos Leões is a convenient stop for families looking to take a break and enjoy the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
One of the world’s most beautiful bookstores is a must-see in Porto. With its neo-Gothic architecture, intricate woodwork, and iconic red staircase, the library offers a visual feast for visitors of all ages. It’s famously linked to the Harry Potter series, with many believing it inspired J.K. Rowling and her visions of Hogwarts during her time in Porto. What makes Av. dos Aliados especially appealing for families is its proximity to so many key sights. Behind the City Hall, you can discover Trindade Square and the charming Trindade Church. And, for a quirky stop, peek inside the most beautiful McDonald’s in the world! It might not be a meal destination, but the building’s elegant, old-world design makes it worth a look. With its central location, striking architecture, and family-friendly accessibility, Av. dos Aliados is a fantastic starting point for your Porto adventures.

Palácio de Cristal’s gardens offer a peaceful escape from Porto’s bustling streets, making it an ideal spot for families. Built 170 years ago for a World Expo, it is home to an array of non-native plants. You will have great views of the Douro River and shaded benches perfect for bird-watching.
Kids will love exploring the themed gardens, each changing color and atmosphere with the seasons. Whether they’re running around the open spaces or enjoying the fresh air, this is a fantastic spot for family fun.

SEA LIFE is a big family friendly aquarium you can enjoy in Porto. We have done it, and the kids absolutely love it! You can discover over 3,000 fascinating sea creatures! This aquarium offers a full-day experience that’s both fun and educational for all ages. Get up close to incredible marine life, including sharks, rays, seahorses, and more. Kids will love seeing the adorable penguins on the newly added Penguin Island!
It’s a great way to spark curiosity and help your family learn about the oceans while having a blast. After exploring, you can relax at the on-site café, with beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean—a perfect spot for a family break!
This indoor museum, of sorts, will delight kids with an indoor boat ride. The ride takes passengers through several periods of Portuguese history and is reminiscent of It’s A Small World at Disney 😀.
