Many tourists visiting Lisbon try to combine a day trip to both Cascais and Sintra in one go. While this can be a whirlwind experience, expats and those familiar with the area often prefer to take their time and plan multiple visits, using Cascais as a place to relax and explore at a slower pace. Cascais is a picturesque seaside town located about 20 miles (32 km) west of Lisbon. It’s easily accessible and makes for a fantastic day trip or longer stay for families.

Transportation Options:

• Train: The most scenic way to get to Cascais is by taking the train from Cais do Sodré station in Lisbon. The 50-minute ride follows the coastline, offering stunning ocean views. Plus, kids love the train ride! And the best thing is you can get tickets for 2.45 euros one way.
  
• Car: If you prefer driving, Cascais is about a 30-minute trip via the A5 highway. Parking can be tricky in the center, but there are paid lots available.
  
• Taxi/Uber: A taxi or Uber from Lisbon Airport or downtown Lisbon to Cascais costs around 30-40 euros.

Best Season To Enjoy Cascais

Cascais is lovely year-round, but the best time for a visit depends on your plans:

• Spring (March-May): Pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and perfect for outdoor exploration.

Family Tip: The main pedestrian area is stroller-friendly, making it easy for families with little ones. But honestly, I highly recommend taking a carrier instead of a stroller; it will allow you to explore Cascais better. 

3. Visit Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth)

This dramatic cliff formation is a fascinating natural wonder where waves crash into the rocks below. Kids will love the power of nature on display!

Family Tip: Visit in the afternoon for the best lighting, and don’t forget to hold your little hands—it can get windy!

4. Walk Along the Harbour

The Cascais Marina and harbor area is great for a family stroll. Kids love spotting fish in the clear water and watching boats come and go.
