While Portugal is famous for its long stretches of beautiful beaches and friendly local culture, I was floored when I found out you can actually ski in Portugal as well! What?!
To be fair, I’ve heard the skiing is not the best. It’s not going to live up to the Alps of France, Italy, and Switzerland, but If you’re looking for an unforgettable nature escape in Portugal, Serra da Estrela should be on your list!
As the country’s highest mountain range, it offers everything from breathtaking landscapes and charming villages to outdoor adventures and—yes!—even Portugal’s only ski resort. Whether you visit in winter for snow-filled fun or in the warmer months for hikes and river swims, Serra da Estrela is a year-round, family-friendly destination.

Where Is Serra da Estrela Located?
Serra da Estrela is in central Portugal, spanning the districts of Guarda and Castelo Branco. It is home to the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the largest protected area in Portugal, known for its dramatic peaks, glacial valleys, and unique rock formations.
How To Get To Serra da Estrela?
We have visited Serra da Estrela only once and drove our car from Lisbon. We stuffed all five kids and the dog into the car for the 3+ hour drive and arrived at sunset. It was a spontaneous trip, but super fun. The views are amazing! It was wintertime, and when we didn’t find snow, we enjoyed the cooler temps and lots of ice!
The drive is easy. Freeways in Portugal are regulated by toll and very well maintained. The tolls are not cheap (20-25€ each way), but the driving makes up for it with few cars on the road and smooth roads. Service stations are plentiful with yummy food available (so much better than in the US!).
From Lisbon
- By car: About 3 hours (take the A1 and A23 highways toward Covilhã or Seia). Note that tolls can be 40-50€ round trip.
- By train: Take a train from Lisbon to Guarda or Covilhã (approx. 4h 30m, €15-€25), then rent a car or take a bus.
- By bus: Direct routes from Lisbon to Covilhã and Guarda are available (approx. 4h, €12-€20).
From Porto
- By car: About 2 hours (via the A1 and A25 highways). Again, tolls!
- By train: Trains run from Porto to Guarda (approx. 2h 30m, €21-€33), then a bus or car rental is needed.
- By bus: Direct buses connect Porto to Covilhã and Guarda (approx. 3h, €7-€17).
From Madrid/Spain
- By car: About 4.5 hours (via the A-5 highway into Portugal). Tolls would be even higher.
- By Airplane: Take a flight from Madrid to Porto, then a bus transfer to La Guarda. (approx. 8h 30m, €102-€250)
- By bus: Long-distance buses are available from Madrid to Guarda (approx. 5h 30m, €17-€38).
Best Time To Visit Serra da Estrela
Serra da Estrela is a year-round destination, but each season offers something unique:
Winter (December to February): Perfect for snow activities and experiencing Portugal’s only ski resort. Many Portuguese have not seen snow or interacted with it, even in Lisbon where we are from. Going to play in the snow can be an adventure in and of itself. However, note that snow is not guaranteed! There can be large snow dumps or you can go and not see any.
Spring (March to May): Mild weather, blooming flowers, and fewer crowds make it an ideal time for hiking and exploring. Hiking is amazing in this area of Portugal.
Summer (June to August): Warm temperatures allow for river swims and mountain lake adventures, though it can get hot in the valleys.
Autumn (September to November): Stunning foliage, pleasant hiking conditions, and a great time for food lovers, as it coincides with regional harvests and festivals. Some of their best are Feira da Castanha (Chestnut Festival) in Manteigas and the Festival do Queijo in Seia.
9 Things To Do in Serra da Estrela
Serra da Estrela offers a new side of Portugal outside some of the “heavy hitters” like Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve. You’ll find a lot more of the traditional culture, with a focus on a slower pace, hearty meats and cheeses (cheese from this region is famous around Portugal), and sweeping open spaces. Here are some of the top things you shouldn’t miss:
1. Ski Resort Serra Estrela, Portugal
In the Covilhã region, the Estancia de Ski in the heart of Serra da Estrela is the only ski resort in Portugal. It is set in the higher ground of the Serra Estrela and is much loved during the winter months for skiing and other snow activities, when there is snow!
Best Time to Visit: December to February
Family Tip: The ski school offers beginner-friendly lessons for kids, and there’s a designated snow play area for younger children. Sledding is also an option for those not ready to ski.
Highlight: Equipment rental available. Price: Day passes + Equipment start at €50 per person.
2. Serra da Estrela Natural Park
This vast protected area is a paradise for outdoor lovers, offering scenic hiking trails, wildlife spotting, and Portugal’s highest peak, Torre, at 1,993 meters.
Best Time to Visit: March to October
Family Tip: Take the cable car up to Torre for a fun, scenic ride that kids will love, or choose the short and easy Trilho dos Poios Branco trail for little hikers.
Highlight: Check for the famous ‘Cabeça do Velho’ (Old Man’s Head) and ‘Pedra do Urso’ (Bear Rock) rock formations. Price: Free entry. There are also private tours if you want to explore more of it.
3. Glacial Valleys Route
Drive or hike through the ancient glacial valleys of Zêzere and Loriga, showcasing dramatic landscapes formed by ice ages long past.
Best Time to Visit: April to September
Family Tip: The Zêzere valley route is accessible for families with older children, with plenty of stopping points for breaks. Pack binoculars for wildlife spotting.

4. Estrela Geopark
Recognized by UNESCO, this park is packed with geological wonders, unique rock formations, and archaeological sites.
Best Time to Visit: Year-round
Family Tip: Visit the interactive Estrela Geopark Interpretation Center in Manteigas, where kids can touch real rock samples and learn about ancient fossils.

5. Covão dos Conchos
One of Portugal’s most Instagram-famous spots! After a hike of around 5km, you’ll be rewarded with this amazing wonder. It looks like a surreal circular lake waterfall, almost like a portal to another world! It is an engineering marvel that is a drain, so be careful in this regard.
People often take a dip, describing the water as chilly but absolutely refreshing. It’s a must-do experience when visiting the area!
Best Time to Visit: March to November
Family Tip: The hike can be a bit challenging for younger kids, so consider bringing a baby carrier or choosing a shorter alternative hike nearby.
Highlight: The surreal man-made waterfall. Price: Free.
6. Covilhã
A vibrant mountain town is known as the gateway to Serra da Estrela, offering street art, history, and excellent local dining. Covilhã is a great place to take a break, enjoy a meal, and dive into its rich history at the museum.
Best Time to Visit: Year-round
Family Tip: Take the kids to the Wool Museum, where they can try weaving on traditional looms. The street art tour is also a fun way to engage kids with colorful murals.
Highlight: Colorful murals and historical charm. Price: Free to explore; museum entry around, Adults: 2€, Teenagers: 1€, Children: Free Admission. Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30-12:00 and 2:30-6:00pm
7. Walking Around Guarda
As Portugal’s highest city, Guarda is filled with medieval charm, an impressive cathedral, and stunning panoramic views. One of the highlights is the Keep of Guarda Castle, an isolated 13th-century structure set at an altitude of 1,056 meters.
Another must-do experience is the Mondego Walkways, which officially opened in November. These 12-km wooden walkways follow the Mondego River and its tributaries, crossing three suspension bridges and offering breathtaking scenery within the UNESCO Estrela Geopark.

Family Tip: The castle ruins are a great spot for a pretend medieval adventure, and the main square has space for kids to run around safely.

8. River Beaches In Serra da Estrela
