Living in Lisbon for nearly four years as a family of seven has been incredible. We landed in Lisbon in August 2021, tired from a long flight but excited to take on the adventure of expat life!
Since then, we’ve been exploring Portugal as often as we can while still feeding our travel lusts for the rest of the world. One of the best parts of our Portugal explorations has been discovering new places. Sesimbra is a gem we discovered this year! We visited our first Carnival in February. At first, I thought it might be a quiet, unremarkable place, but we loved our visit to this little town and can’t wait to get back for another weekend getaway.
Sesimbra was the perfect getaway for our family, filled with fun surprises and activities that made our trip unforgettable. In this post, I’ll share everything that made it so special, plus helpful tips to ensure you make the most of your visit.

Discover Sesimbra with Kids
If you’re looking for a destination for your family vacation, Sesimbra should definitely be on your list. Nestled along Portugal’s stunning Costa Azul, this charming fishing village offers a fantastic mix of history, nature, relaxation and adventure.

Fun Facts About Sesimbra
- Sesimbra was first settled by the Celts, and originally called Cempsibriga, which means “high place” or “fortification”. The Moors later built a castle in the ninth century, which was reclaimed by Portuguese forces in 1165. This castle is super fun to visit with kids! It’s free (bonus!) and inspires little minds with the battlements, sprawling views of the ocean and could be an amazing spot for hide-and-seek.
- The town of Sesimbra sits at the base of the Serra da Arrábida mountain range, offering spectacular scenery and rich historical significance. Fortaleza de Santiago is one of the town’s most iconic historical landmarks.
- Fishing has always been Sesimbra’s main economic activity, making it one of the top seafood hubs in Portugal. Like many Americans, we are learning to love seafood (growing up in Colorado, I didn’t lean into lots of fresh seafood meals), but I do LOVE some fresh grilled fish like Dourada or Robalo. So, so good.
- The Mediterranean climate brings hot summers and mild winters, making it an ideal spot for beach days, especially in spring and summer.
- Sesimbra offers a variety of things to do with kids. Relax at Praia do Ouro, Praia da Califórnia or Praia da Arrábida, hike in Parque Natural da Arrábida, explore the Sesimbra Castle, enjoy dolphin watching tour, and indulge in fresh seafood.
How to Get to Sesimbra & Getting Around
Sesimbra is located just 40 km south of Lisbon, making it a perfect destination for a day trip or weekend getaway. You could pair a weekend with some fun activities in Lisbon and then take an Uber to Sesimbra for only about 40€. My parents did just this recently! We had lunch in Lisbon and then they took an Uber to a hotel a few days before we met them there.
You can reach Sesimbra in 45 minutes by car or 1 hour by bus from Sete Rios station. If you’re planning to explore surrounding areas like Cabo Espichel or Arrábida, I recommend renting a car, though public transport is also available. If you plan to stay just in Sesimbra, everything is walkable and there is no need for a car. However, prepare little legs for some steep climbs as the city lies on the side of a mountain! Or just stay by the beach the entire time. 🙂

Where to Stay in Sesimbra with Kids
Sesimbra has a lot of nice hotels, so you will probably find a place to stay very easily. And fortunately, since it’s a very touristy place, many hotels have kid-friendly amenities and spaces. For example, many hotels have pools and even activities focused for the littlest ones. Here are my recommendations:
- Vila De Sol: A great spot that feels like staying at home. The garden is perfect for letting your kids run wild, and the atmosphere is pretty relaxed. What I like about this hotel is that the rooms are spacious, there’s a small pool and, best of all, a buffet breakfast.
- Casal do Frade: This hotel is perfect for a peaceful, yet adventurous family vacation. Nestled in nature, this place has a rustic charm that makes your kids forget all about their phones and actually relax! There’s a really cool pool and hammocks for everyone to maybe take a nap or just hang there and enjoy the views.
- Four Points by Sheraton: This last option is, I have to say, so pretty! We stayed here. It’s modern, beachy and the rooms are big. What I like is that the beach is close to the rooms. So, if your kids get tired after a long day making sand castles, you won’t have to worry about getting to your hotel.

10+ Must-Do Things in Sesimbra with Kids
Whether you’re looking to educate the kids on the history of Sesimbra, relax on the beach or enjoy outdoor activities, there’s something for every family in this charming coastal town. Here are my top 10+ family-friendly activities to do in Sesimbra.
1. Enjoy the Beaches of Sesimbra
Sesimbra’s coastline is ideal for beach-loving families. Praia do Ouro and Praia da Califórnia are perfect for younger kids, with gentle waves, lifeguards on duty (during the summer months) and plenty of beachfront cafés and snack bars. The promenade is stroller-friendly and bathrooms are easily accessible.
For those looking for a more secluded experience, Praia da Ribeira do Cavalo is a boat-accessible beach known for its picturesque beauty, though it’s more remote, so pack accordingly.

For a more adventurous beach day, consider visiting Praia da Arrábida (maybe my favorite beach near Lisbon), set within Arrábida Natural Park. This beach offers clear waters and stunning views. In fact, some photos make it look like the Caribbean!
Note for Praia da Arrabida that from June to mid-September the access road is closed to vehicles. Visitors must park at Setúbal or Azeitão and take the shuttle bus. Taking a shuttle bus with five kids is not on my list of favorite activities! We tend to visit in May or October to avoid this.
Tip: The shuttle to Praia da Arrábida is stroller-friendly, but it can get crowded. So, try to arrive early.
2. Explore Sesimbra Castle with Kids
One of the most iconic landmarks in Sesimbra is Sesimbra Castle, built in the 9th century. Our hotel sat at the base of this castle, and I loved walking out of our hotel to see a castle on the hill each day! I told my kids, “I definitely did not grow up with castles outside hotels.”
This medieval fortress offers panoramic views of the village, the Atlantic Ocean and the Arrábida mountains. The kids loved running around the old stone walls while we enjoyed the stunning vistas.
You can either hike up (which is a bit steep) or drive up to the castle (we opted for the latter). Inside, you can explore the castle walls and enjoy the interactive exhibitions. It’s free to enter, and there is a small gift shop and cafe.

3. Visit the Sesimbra Maritime Museum
If your family is interested in maritime history, the Sesimbra Maritime Museum is a fun stop. Located inside Fortaleza de Santiago, this museum features exhibits on the town’s fishing history, including miniature boats, fishing gear and more. It’s an excellent indoor option for families, especially on a hot day. I would have to force my kids to go to this, honestly, and my parents had no interest. But maybe your kids are more curious than mine and would love this!
4. Take a Dolphin-Watching Tour in Sesimbra
Sesimbra is one of the best places in Portugal for dolphin-watching (or golfinhos in Portuguese). We’ve done various dolphin tours, and they are always a hit! We have a couple of kids that get seasick, so pack the Dramamine accordingly in advance.
Be sure to book your tour in advance, and don’t be late! They will usually leave without you (learned this through a sad experience).
5. Hike in Arrábida Nature Park
If your family enjoys nature, Parque Natural da Arrábida is perfect. This park offers scenic walking trails with breathtaking views of the Atlantic. The trails are shaded, making them comfortable even on hot days. Some trails are stroller-friendly, while others may require a baby carrier.
For those who love a bit of adventure, the park has more rugged trails perfect for older kids and teens. If you’re visiting during summer, be sure to pack water and wear comfortable shoes for the hike.
Parking can be a little tricky in the summer, but heading out early is going to be better for securing a spot. Most Portuguese aren’t rolling out anywhere before 10 AM (our family is basically the same!), so you’ll have better luck early in the morning.
6. Discover Dinosaur Footprints at Cabo Espichel
For dinosaur-loving kids (or anyone fascinated by natural history), a visit to Cabo Espichel is a must. There, you can see fossilized dinosaur footprints embedded in the rocks. The walk to the site is a bit steep, so it’s better suited for older kids, but it’s an exciting and educational experience.
Afterward, explore the nearby sanctuary and lighthouse for more beautiful views.

7. Try Water Sports in Sesimbra
Sesimbra is a fantastic place to introduce kids to water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding. These activities are perfect for families since the waters are calm and easy to navigate. Rentals and lessons are available at the main beach areas, making it accessible for all skill levels.
You’ll often find rentals right on the beach and can just walk up and schedule. Sometimes there are also inflatable water slides and other inflatable things in the ocean! You can buy a ticket to play on them.
8. Visit the Sesimbra Market
The Mercado Municipal de Sesimbra is a great place to experience local flavors. You’ll find fresh seafood, local produce and traditional Portuguese sweets. The market is vibrant and a fun stop for families who enjoy exploring local food.
The kids might not find this super engaging, as it is mostly food staples. However, you can usually finish with an ice cream or make a scavenger hunt out of the market to spice it up! Parents will enjoy seeing the local vibe of daily life.
9. Explore Lagoa Pequena
For a peaceful break from the beach, Lagoa Pequena offers a tranquil experience for families. This protected ecological reserve is one of the top birdwatching spots in Europe. The kids had a great time spotting birds through binoculars, and walking along the nature trails was a fun and calming way to spend the morning.
Tip: Arrive early since the center closes at 5 PM.
10. Visit the Municipal Library and Cine-Theatre
If you need a quiet break from the sun, head to the Municipal Library in Sesimbra. It has a wonderful children’s section with books, computers and games. They also host storytelling events and classes. Afterward, check out the cine-theatre next door, where family-friendly movies are screened, or enjoy a live performance.
Extra tip: Don’t miss “O Melhor Croissant da Minha Rua” for an amazing treat! Literal translation: The Best Croissant on My Street.

11. Family-Friendly Snorkeling Adventure at the Luiz Saldanha Marine Reserve
For families seeking an exciting and safe way to explore the marine life of Sesimbra, the Luiz Saldanha Marine Reserve offers a unique and unforgettable experience. While the reserve is renowned as one of Portugal’s top diving destinations, its snorkeling excursions are perfect for families of all ages.
Guided by experienced instructors, families will have the chance to snorkel in crystal-clear waters and encounter vibrant marine life, such as colorful fish, playful sea creatures and even the occasional sea turtle. Whether you’re a first-time snorkeler or a seasoned swimmer, the calm, shallow waters make it accessible for everyone, including children aged six and up.
What to Expect:
- Guided Snorkeling Tours: Explore the stunning underwater world with an expert guide who will point out marine life and share fun facts about the local ecosystem.
- Small Group Sizes: Enjoy a more intimate experience with personalized attention, ensuring safety and comfort for families.
- Family-Focused: Kids will love spotting schools of fish, while parents can relax knowing that everyone is under the supervision of certified professionals. No prior snorkeling experience is required.
- Safety First: High-quality equipment and life jackets are provided for peace of mind, ensuring that everyone feels secure in the water.
We have dived with our kids and love it. We’ve done this at one of our favorite resorts in Honduras, but trying it in Portugal would be amazing!
Tips for Visiting Praia da Arrábida with Kids
If you visit Sesimbra, you are so close to this amazing natural park! It makes sense, if you have a car, to spend some time exploring here.
Praia da Arrábida, nestled within Arrábida Natural Park, is one of the most stunning beaches in Portugal. However, accessing this beautiful spot requires some preparation, especially depending on the time of year.
Access Restrictions During Summer
From mid-June to mid-September, access to the main road leading to Praia da Arrábida is closed to vehicles between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM to limit traffic and preserve the natural beauty of the area.
How to Get There:
- By Car: You can drive to Praia do Creiro, where parking is available. It costs €4 per day and is the main hub for shuttle buses into the park.
- By Shuttle: From Praia do Creiro, take the Carris Metropolitana shuttle (Line 4477), which runs every 30 minutes between 8:30 AM and 8:00 PM. The shuttle takes you to some of the most beautiful beaches in the park, including Galapinhos, Galapos and Coelhos.

Tip: The shuttle is stroller-friendly, but it can get crowded, especially on weekends. So, aim to arrive early.
Praia da Arrabida offers a fabulous day in the sun. Bringing an umbrella or sunshade is a good idea for the relentless Portugal sun, but not required. There are two cafes onsite to enjoy some ice cream, get some food (eat on the beach or inside for a break) and restrooms.
We also explored the beach a bit on our last visit and enjoyed the little tide pools. There is usually a good breeze and we like to bring a kite as well.
Tips for Visiting Sesimbra With Kids
- Best time to visit: Spring and summer are ideal for beach visits, but don’t forget to bring hats, sunscreen and plenty of water.
- Stroller-friendly: Most areas are stroller-friendly, but places like Sesimbra Castle and some beaches have steep paths, so a baby carrier may be more practical.
- Car rentals: A rental car is great for exploring surrounding areas. Public transport is available, but can be limited.
- Comfortable clothing: Many attractions involve walking on uneven terrain, so comfortable shoes are a must.
What to Eat in Sesimbra

Sesimbra is a seafood lover’s paradise. Must-try dishes include:
- Sardinhas Assadas (Grilled Sardines): Fresh sardines served with roasted peppers or potatoes.
- Caldeirada (Fish Stew): A hearty fish stew made with fresh seafood and vegetables.
- Ameijoas à Bulhão Pato (Clams in Garlic Sauce): Clams prepared in a garlicky sauce with white wine and cilantro.
- Choco Frito (Fried Cuttlefish): A local delicacy that’s crispy on the outside and tender inside.
- Espadarte (Swordfish): A local specialty, often grilled or baked with herbs and olive oil.
- Pastéis de Nata (Custard Tarts): A must-try Portuguese dessert, crispy on the outside and creamy inside.
Restaurant Recommendations in Sesimbra with Kids
Now that you’ve figured out what kind of food you’re craving, I have some delicious recommendations for your entire family. So, let’s dive in:
- Tacos Pexito: We loved this taco place right near the beach. The shrimp tacos were the best.
- Sushi Angel Cotovia: We also enjoyed this all-you-can eat sushi nearby (it is about 10 minutes by car). However, my parents did get a little sick the next day! The rest of us did not.
- Villas Sesimbra Restaurant: This restaurant was in our hotel, and we really liked it. You don’t need to be a hotel guest, but it is a hike up the hill from the beach!

My Portuguese friend recommended these two seafood locations in Sesimbra if you like seafood. I couldn’t convince our group to go on this last trip, but plan to in the future.
- O Batel: Apart from the great sea views, it has great reviews on their service, atmosphere and creme brulee!
- Marisqueria O Rodinhas: Honestly it was hard to know we did not visit this place, might go soon! But the seafood here looks incredible, a must when visiting Sesimbra.
- Tasca do Isaías: And my friend’s final recommendation was this taco place. It also has mostly seafood, but the best part is that it’s grilled!
If you’re in Portugal, especially in Lisbon, take the time to visit Sesimbra. It’s worth it! Feel free to drop a comment or message if you have any questions.
Happy travels,
Leslie
