The Algarve has been a family favorite of ours for a long time, and it’s easy to understand why. This sunny southern tip of Portugal hosts the waterparks, a favorite of ours, amazing cliff beaches, some famous sea caves and more!
Ever since moving to Portugal in 2021, we’ve made one or two trips per year to enjoy the Algarve. This area hosts a LOT of expats and some locals think it is “too full” of foreigners to be authentic Portugal. I find it all a lot of fun, but do notice that English is prevalent in many parts of the Algarve.
With sunshine, golden beaches and charming Portuguese hospitality, it’s the perfect holiday spot. In the heart of the Algarve lies Vilamoura, a resort town designed with families in mind. This darling town is considered one of the “ritzy” parts of Portugal and hosts many celebrities.

We recently visited Vilamoura for the first time and loved it! The old town is incredibly charming. You can find tons of things to do with kids, easy walks, tasty food and enough adventure to keep even the most energetic kids engaged. We stayed at the beautiful Four Seasons Vilamoura Resort with our five kids. With three pools, a game room and kids club, we had more to do than time to do it!
If you’re considering a trip with your family, here’s why Vilamoura should top your list.

One of the standout features of Vilamoura is how accessible it is:

Airport Transfers: If you’ve ever dealt with luggage, car seats and tired little ones after a flight, you’ll appreciate having a pre-booked transfer ready for you. Services like Faro Airport Transfers or Get Transfers often provide car seats, easing one big concern.
Car Rental: Planning some day trips? Vilamoura is walkable around the marina and beaches, but a car allows you to explore waterparks, hidden coves or neighboring towns at your leisure.
Driving from Lisbon: The trip from Lisbon to Vilamoura takes about two-and-a-half hours, making it an easy and scenic drive through Portugal’s countryside. If you’re hitting the road, pack plenty of snacks, music and extra chargers. trust us, with five kids in tow, music alone won’t cut it! Our favorite way to pass the time is getting lost in a great family audiobook together.

What to Do in Vilamoura with Kids: Adventures Big and Small
Vilamoura is more than just a chic marina town, it’s a family paradise! With golden beaches, calm waters and plenty of activities for all ages, it’s the perfect spot to balance relaxation with adventure. I promise, the beaches of the Algarve are breathtaking. Most are set against stunning sandstone cliffs.
While these are not stable to climb or be close to, they provide the most amazing backdrop. We stopped by a random beach, Tres Irmãos, or Three Brothers, simply because I saw a sign for a beach. We hit it at sunset and I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. It brought me to tears, and I see stunning coasts on the regular!
From splashing around in water parks to exploring hidden coves, riding bikes along the coast or taking a boat trip to spot dolphins, every day brings something new for kids (and grown-ups too!).

1.Relax on Vilamoura’s Family-Friendly Beaches

The beaches around Vilamoura are ideal for families, with calm waters and soft golden sand perfect for sandcastle building and paddle play.
- Praia da Falésia is a favorite, stretching for miles beneath dramatic red cliffs. The wide beach means you’ll always find space, even in summer, and little ones will love running freely on the sand.
- Praia de Vilamoura, located right by the marina, is easily accessible if you want to combine beach time with a lunch or ice cream stop.
Facilities like lifeguards, sun loungers and shaded umbrellas make these beaches stress-free for parents. Pack buckets and spades, and you could happily spend the entire day here. We also love to bring along boogie boards. My boys spend endless hours going from water to sand to explore the sea caves famous for this area.

2. Splash & Play at Aquashow Waterpark
No family holiday in Vilamoura is complete without a trip to Aquashow Park, the largest waterpark in the Algarve and a guaranteed hit with kids of all ages. Just a quick 10-minute drive from Vilamoura, this massive park combines thrilling rides, splash zones and even some unique attractions you won’t find elsewhere in Portugal.
To be honest, our favorite Algarve waterpark is Zoomarine, but we’ve enjoyed all of them! Aquashow was our first Portugal water park and it’s a sure day of fun!

What makes Aquashow such a great family outing is the variety. For older kids and teenagers, the park has high-speed water slides, heart-racing rides and even Europe’s largest water coaster. For those who like things a little calmer, there’s a wave pool where you can bob along together or a lazy river perfect for floating in the sunshine.
Toddlers and younger children aren’t left out either; the splash zones are designed just for them, with gentle fountains, smaller slides and shallow pools where they can safely play.
Families will especially enjoy the attractions you can ride together. Nothing beats the laughter of piling into a giant float and whooshing down a slide side by side! It’s these moments, where parents and kids share the excitement, that make the day extra special.

Beyond the water fun, Aquashow also has some surprising features: a small zoo area with birds and reptiles, shows that run throughout the day and even a hotel onsite if you want to turn it into a mini staycation. For families traveling with younger kids, this mix of activities provides a nice balance, so everyone stays entertained.
3. Explore Vilamoura Marina
Vilamoura’s glamorous marina is the beating heart of the town, and it’s a surprisingly family-friendly spot. By day, kids can marvel at the mix of luxury yachts and colorful fishing boats while parents enjoy a coffee at one of the waterfront cafés. The flat, stroller-friendly promenade makes it easy to wander, browse souvenir shops and soak up the sunshine. Our little one brought her skates to the Four Seasons Vilamoura and loved skating around!

In the evening, the atmosphere shifts. Twinkling lights reflect off the water, street performers entertain passing families and the buzz of music and chatter fills the air. The dining options here suit every taste, from fresh seafood to pizza and pasta, and many restaurants have outdoor seating, perfect for families with little ones.
To finish, treat the kids to gelato or ice cream and enjoy a slow stroll along the promenade. It’s a simple routine, but it captures the charm of Vilamoura: stylish yet relaxed, lively but welcoming for children and always full of little moments that make a holiday memorable.
4. Dolphin-Watching Boat Trips in Vilamoura
A dolphin-watching trip from Vilamoura Marina is easily one of the most magical family experiences in the Algarve. Within minutes of leaving the harbor, you’ll find yourself gliding across the Atlantic, scanning the waves for signs of dolphins. These playful creatures are often spotted close to the boats, sometimes leaping out of the water or swimming alongside, an unforgettable sight for both kids and parents.

Pro tip: bring sunscreen, hats and a light jacket, as the sun can be strong and the breeze cool once you’re out on the open water. And don’t forget your camera to take the best shots.

One of the best ways to experience Vilamoura at a slower pace is by hopping on a bike. The town is considered one of the most bike-friendly in Portugal, thanks to its flat layout and well-marked cycle paths that weave through neighborhoods, along the marina and out toward nearby villages. It’s easy, safe and enjoyable for all ages, making it a top activity for families who want a mix of fun and exercise.
Renting bikes is simple, with plenty of shops offering everything from standard bicycles to e-bikes. For families with younger children, many rental places also provide child seats, tag-alongs, or trailers, so even toddlers can come along for the ride. This makes cycling a truly inclusive activity where no one feels left out.

If your family enjoys a little friendly competition, Family Golf Park in Vilamoura is an activity you won’t want to miss. Themed around ancient Rome, the park features two 18-hole courses filled with statues, bridges, fountains and water features, giving it a unique atmosphere that sparks kids’ imaginations while keeping adults entertained too.
The courses are well-maintained, with smooth greens and creative obstacles that strike a nice balance between fun and challenge. Younger children can focus on just getting the ball in the hole while older kids (and competitive parents!) might try to master tricky angles or beat their personal scores. Best Times to Go to Vilamoura, Algarve
If you’re planning a family trip to Vilamoura, timing is key. We’ve found that the best times to visit are during the shoulder seasons: late May to early June or early to mid-September.
Why choose these times? Picture this: the sun is shining, the skies are a clear Algarve blue and daytime temperatures are a comfortable 24 to 28 °C. It’s warm enough for beach days and splashing in the pool, but not so hot that kids get cranky and parents seek shade.
You’ll also avoid the largest summer crowds. Water parks are open and lively, the sea is nicely warm and the beaches are spacious enough to spread out a picnic blanket without crowding. Additionally, hotels are more affordable during this season, which is great for family budgets.
If school holidays are your only option, don’t worry, you can still enjoy Vilamoura in peak season. Just be prepared for hotter days (30 °C and above), larger crowds at attractions and higher prices. The key is to plan ahead: book flights, accommodation and must-do activities early so you can relax once you arrive.
