Portugal offers so many things: spectacular beaches, rich culture (Portugal pre-dates the Romans!), history and amazing food. Hence, we live here! We are approaching our four-year anniversary, and it only feels more and more like home. I love exploring this country!
One of the best tips I got from a Portuguese person last year? River beaches, also know as praias fluviais! These are a summer paradise and will for sure be a core memory of summer for my family. We visited our first one in Lousã last year and loved it! While evenyone loves the beaches, these fresh water river versions of summer fun offer a gem of an experience in summer.
What is a river beach (praia fluvial)? When I first heard about these, I envisioned some river interior to Portugal that had a long, wide beach somehow similar to our Lisbon beaches! I was way off. A river beach is basically a mountain run-off river or stream that has been damned in some way, either naturally or made-made, and is a sort of swimming pool! Some do have a “beach”, either natural or artificial, but it is mostly like a swimming pool.

The plus side? It’s fresh water! You can see fish, and you can forget the harsh chlorine in your hair and skin! Downside? It can be cold! The water is snow run-off, usually, but on a hot Portuguese summer day, it can be delicious.
I want to share with you some of the best hidden spots in Portugal that are perfect for a summer vacation. We love heading to the Algarve in summer (both for water parks and otherwise!) and I want to share some of these magical river beaches in our favorite summer locale.
Another plus side? Traditional Portuguese beaches during summer are filled with people, so if you are not a big fan of crowds, these river beaches in southern Portugal are a more peaceful option. Many of these beaches have picnic areas, playgrounds, or are just great places to relax and enjoy a summer afternoon with your family and friends. Plus, you’ll be with lots of locals! Time to practice that Portuguese.

What Is a Praia Fluvial (River Beach) and How Are They Different From Coastal Beaches?
River beaches, or “praias fluviais,” are “beaches”, or swimming holes, that, instead of offering the typical coastal views we associate with Portugal, are surrounded by mountains, forests, or even glacial valleys. These spots provide a peaceful and relaxing alternative to coastal beaches, which are often full of activity.
River beaches are natural areas with sand or pebbles where you can sunbathe (and many people do!) and swim—just like in the ocean. One big difference is that the water is freshwater instead of saltwater. It’s also much calmer. Yes, you might see a few waves, but they’re nothing like the strong waves at the coast.
Most of these praia fluvies (the plural for river beaches in Portuguese) have extra bonuses, like bathrooms, cafes, and more! Some have playgrounds or camping sites. In fact, our first camping was at a river beach!
This peaceful setting is what makes river beaches so popular. As soon as the weather warms up and the days get longer, families head out to enjoy the sun. They picnic, paddle in the water, go kayaking, play ball games, or just relax. Some of these beaches also have lifeguards, cafés or snack bars, and changing rooms or restrooms.
Why Visit River Beaches in Southern Portugal
I’ve already given you a few reasons why you should visit these river beaches (praia fluvies). However, why not expand on that and give you an in-depth list of why they’re worth your time?
- Escape the Crowds: Algarve beaches during the summer can be packed! So, if you’re looking for a quiet alternative where you can find a place to sit with your entire family, river beaches are the best option. They’re also safer if you have a big family like ours, or if you’d like more privacy in general.
- Freshwater Swimming: This is one thing that I absolutely love! Freshwater means no salty skin, no stinging eyes, and (like I saw the other day in a video) no ocean creatures. Just clear and calm freshwater that’s perfect for your kids and family.
- Family-Friendly Atmosphere: One thing that I love about these praia fluvies (river beaches) is that most of them have areas where you can have a picnic. There are plenty of shaded spots and even playgrounds—perfect when you have kids. It’s a great place to keep the entire family entertained!

- Scenic Natural Settings: Don’t get me wrong—I love a day at the beach and a coastal sunset! However, here you get to experience different kinds of views like forests, mountains, and sometimes even waterfalls. So, it really depends on what you’d like to see and experience that day!
- Budget-Friendly: Visiting these river beaches in Southern Portugal is not expensive or some sort of luxury; they’re free! In most of them, there’s free parking and you will find small restaurants or shops that sell low-cost food. Also, there are no entrance fees, so this makes praia fluvies (river beaches) an affordable day trip. It’s a first come, first served mentality, but I don’t know that you need to worry about it being inaccessible. You may not have a lot of options for a towel spot is all!
- Local Hidden Gems: This is one of the biggest perks! Whether you’re a local or just visiting Portugal, these are places where you’ll find very few tourists. So, they’re perfect for an authentic experience and a more original way to spend your time in Southern Portugal.
- Outdoor Activities: Apart from swimming, because of the calmer water, you’ll find that many people enjoy sunbathing, canoeing, paddleboarding, and going on hikes to explore the amazing scenery. But if you’re just looking to relax, perhaps reading a book might be your best bet—there’s something for every mood!
- Near the Algarve Coast: You don’t have to go far or spend hours on the highway—many of these river beaches (praia fluvies) are just a short drive inland from popular southern towns like Silves, Monchique, or Aljezur. That makes them perfect for a family day trip!
- Milder Conditions: My last reason for why you should visit river beaches is the conditions. You won’t get giant waves or windy days when you can’t access the beach because of the weather! There are no strong ocean currents—just calm waters and softer breezes, great for kids or people with weaker swimming skills.
Best 5 River Beaches in the Algarve
Now you know the reasons why you should visit these hidden spots for swimming in Southern Portugal. If you’re excited about the idea, let me share a list of the best river beaches (praia fluvies) in Algarve.

- Pego do Fundo: This river beach ranks among the best on our list! It has plenty of space for picnics and for your kids to play sports or enjoy other activities. The sand is very soft and has a beautiful, light color. What we loved most about this place is that it has a restaurant where you can relax and eat. However, if you prefer to have a picnic, feel free to pack your own snacks. Surrounded by nature and plenty of trees, the area is peaceful and the water is calm.
- Praia Fluvial de Fontes: This river beach is perhaps one of the most family-friendly river beaches in Portugal. Why? Because, in addition to picnic areas and a parking lot, there’s a floating swimming pool! the beach is accessible for people with reduced mobility. You’ll also find showers.
Praia Fluvial do Sítio das Fontes is located in Cabeça Ruiva, near the Castelo de Bode Dam Reservoir. As a tip, pay attention to the road on your way there—it offers stunning views, just like this river beach!
- Praia Fluvial Tapada Grande: What sets this river beach apart is that it has many tables where you can sit down, eat, and enjoy a picnic. Even better—it has grills! You can take part in plenty of outdoor activities, and the area is so spacious that you won’t need to worry about your kids running out of room to play.
If you’re just looking for a relaxing day, you can sit on the soft sand or at one of the many tables to unwind and admire the beautiful surroundings.
- Praia Fluvial Santa Clara Dam: This may be one of the largest river beaches in Southern Portugal, and it’s also one of the most scenic. It’s located on the Costa Vicentina, and from here you can also access the river beach of Albufeira de Santa Clara. Some of the facilities include free parasols, restrooms, and a large parking lot!
But perhaps what we loved most is that this beach is especially peaceful. Yes, your kids can play, go kitesurfing, or enjoy a picnic. However, this spot is best for hiking, relaxing, soaking in the views, and simply enjoying your day-trip.
- Fontes de Alte: Before I tell you more about this place, keep in mind that it’s not always open—but you can usually visit during summer. This isn’t your typical river beach. It has distinctive features that make it unique, and the water is clean and refreshing. You’ll also find picnic areas, plenty of shade, trees, grass, and an overall peaceful atmosphere.
I’d recommend arriving early, as the space isn’t very large and seating can be limited. But overall, Praia Fontes de Alte is a fantastic place to bring your kids and spend a quiet day with your family!
Extra Tips to Make Your Day Even Better
Now you know which river beaches or praia fluvies you should visit this summer in Southern Portugal. But in order to plan a perfect day trip with your family, I’d like to share some extra info that I’m pretty sure will be very helpful for you and your family. So, let’s dive in!

Food and Restaurants in South Portugal
Whether you plan to make your own food or just spend a few hours on these river beaches, there are different ways to fill the tummies of your kids! Depending on where you go, you have three options: go to a nearby restaurant, have a picnic and bring your own food, or visit the options they have on site. Check out our favorite foods in Portugal to prepare!
Depending on the area you choose to visit, there are a lot of great restaurant options all throughout the Algarve area. And if you have kids, you will probably want healthy and friendly options for them. That’s why I’d recommend going to tripadvisor.com to find the best restaurant for you and your family!
Now, if you choose to eat on site, all of the praia fluvies mentioned above have picnic areas where you can enjoy your lunch. Whether you bring food from a restaurant or you choose to cook yourself, please remember to keep the areas clean!
We did a BBQ last year with another expat family and it was delicious. They brought the coal and entremadas (kind of like ribs, but closer to pork belly with some bone. Sounds gross, but they are delicious when done right!). We ate and swam and ate some more. It was a glorious day. The grills are first-come, first-served, so plan accordingly.
You also have the option to eat at the restaurants or bars they have at the river beaches. However, I’d like you to keep in mind two things: first, options for some restaurants can be limited and the menus may not have that many options. And second, not all beaches have places to eat, so I highly recommend checking before going!
Different Ways to Get to River Beaches (Praias Fluvies) in Algarve
You’ve finally made the decision to visit one of the river beaches in southern Portugal: yay! Now it’s time to plan a way you can get there in order to make your day extraordinary. Also, whether you’re a local or a tourist, getting to one or more praia fluvies is pretty easy. So, here are my recommendations:
- By Car: Whether you choose to rent a car or if you own a car, this is probably one of the comfier options, especially if you are travelling with a big family like ours. However, be sure to check beforehand for any traffic or weather conditions. Also, don’t forget most river beaches (praia fluvies) have free parking lots! Just a tip: try to arrive early during summer to get a good spot. Most Portuguese don’t roll out until 10 am, so before 10 is a better bet.
- Use Public Transportation: Depending on where you’re staying or living, you can always get there by using public transport. And for some of these river beaches, you might need to take a combination of bus, train, or taxi (not all three at the same time though 🙂). So whatever beach you choose, be sure to check your route beforehand.

Best Seasons to Visit River Beaches in Portugal
Let’s talk about the best seasons to visit southern beaches in Portugal! On a coastal beach, the best seasons to visit are typically spring and summer because it’s sunny, hot, and perfect for any outdoor activities. And to be honest, it’s not that different for river beaches (praia fluvies)!
So let’s start with spring. This season is perfect for people who enjoy warm weather without it being too hot. Especially late spring: the water is starting to warm up, there are fewer tourists, and the sun is perfect for outdoor activities without feeling too tired after a while in the sun. Also, since it’s spring, the scenery might look a bit greener and pretty! However, the water may be too cold to swim in the spring.
Now let’s talk about summer! If you choose to visit the river beaches during this season be prepared for hot and sunny weather—perfect for swimming! The water is warmer, most beaches are open, and, believe it or not, it’s not that crowded as people prefer to visit the coastal beaches.
And you might wonder, what about autumn? I really like this season, even though it is not hot as spring and summer, as it still has very pleasant weather. The water of the beaches during this time is still warm, however as time goes by it starts to get colder. This also makes it a good time to visit, as it’s much quieter since it has less crowds.
Finally, you might wonder about winter. This is one of the times when you barely see people using the praia fluvies since the water tends to be really cold and barely tolerable for swimmers (unless you enjoy really cold water!). Plus, many facilities and beaches are closed during this season.

What You Should Bring When You Get There
You already know the basics about the river beaches or praia fluvies in Portugal, and probably already know what you should bring to a beach. However, here’s what I recommend for a perfect family day at the beach:
- Swimsuits: If you are looking for a day full of swimming, make sure to bring a swimsuit for you and your partner and your kids (boys and girls).
- Sunglasses: If you’re going on a very sunny day, don’t forget to bring a good pair of sunglasses. Trust me, your eyes will thank you, especially if they offer UV protection!
- Towels: Everyone knows a beach day is not complete without beach towels (at least as mom, I think so—you don’t want wet kids in the car!). When choosing towels be sure to choose ones that are sand free and quick dry!
- Sunscreen: Of course, I am going to mention sunscreen, as it’s a must! Make sure to choose the right one for your family’s skin and reapply every couple of hours.
- Beach Bag: Being a mom, I’ve learned that a bag to carry all the essentials is a must. So, I’d highly recommend you bring a comfy big bag to fit all the necessities (plus some snacks).
- Beach Chairs: In case there is no place to sit or you’d like to have a chair instead of sitting on a towel, then a beach chair is a must for you! Be sure to get an easy-to-pack lightweight chair for your trip.
- Cooler: Planning more than just a day at the beach, but also a picnic? Then a cooler is a good idea for keeping all your food and drinks fresh!
I hope you are able to enjoy this Portuguese summer favorite soon! Watch for my recommendations for River Beaches in Northern Portugal and River Beaches in Middle Portugal (Alentejo) coming soon!
Save it for later
